The end of 2016 marked our first full year of business and we've got so much to look back on. Our first year of business brought us so much excitement and happiness, as well as a few challenges to help us grow. One of the greatest joys for us this year was getting to grown within our community: doing work for for local businesses & individuals alike, getting to know other young creatives and business owners and of course, sharing everything as we worked away. Although we try to keep up with all platforms, life often gets too busy, but we are truly hooked on Instagram. With that in mind, we thought we'd share our top 9 Instagram posts of the year, as well as the behind-the-scenes details. The count down is on!
#9 This year we couldn't get enough of portrait work. With portraits, simple is best often rings true to us. Give us perfect light and a neutral background and we're ready to go, which is convenient because we bring our light everywhere and a clean wall is never hard to find. This shot was one of the last shot during a candid portrait session with the amazingly talented Maggie MacCormick in her studio and turned out to be one of our absolute faves.
#8 Over the past year we've had the pleasure of getting to work with the team at The Coast on such a huge variety of stories. We always look forward to working with The Coast team because it's never the same job twice and we've gotten to explore our province with these these guys so much under the guise of work. One of our favourite issues to shoot for was the annual Best of Halifax issue. Visiting the winners was such a pleasure and gave us an excuse to visit some of our favourite spots around town. The Flower Shop is our go to stop for all things floral so we were double excited to get to photograph their beautiful store and congratulate them all at once!
#7 Something we always seemed to be looking for over the past year was a ladder. We have a collection at hom but it seemed like whenever we needed one we didn't have one on hand. So, in this situation we did the next best thing and made ourselves into a ladder, obviously. Don't worry, we've learned from our mistakes and the NxN Mobile is equipped with a ladder for any future occasions when we need that extra height, but thankfully our client caught this moment with our phone so we could cherish the memory.
#6 Working with the girls at Wishbook was probably one of the most relaxing days of work we had all year with the most beautiful local products to photograph, so it's no surprising that the look book photos turned out kind of magical (if we do say so ourselves). We loved the company, creativity and collaboration during this shoot- and all the plants of course!
#5 We were surprised to get a number of inquiries about newborn photos this year. It's not really our niche, but realized it made sense, because who wouldn't want photos of their brand new bundle of joy- especially one as cute as baby Scarlett. With talented mama Brit Design bringing a beautiful baby and bundles of eucalyptus to the table, all we had to do was show up and the cuteness was garunteed to fall in place.
#4 Between Luke and I balancing our own fulltime jobs and NxN (which grew way faster than expected) over the summer, things got a bit overwhelming a time or two. For a few months we were living and breathing work and not doing much (make that anything) else. That being said, this candid was snapped on labour day weekend on a rare day off after yet another busy double work week. No surprise, we weren't working but both of us had cameras in hand, which was a good reminder of how much we love the work we get to do.
#3 Hot on the heels of Baby Scarlett in eucalyptus we had the pleasure of spending time with Baby Beatrice in thistles. It seems like mamas aren't the only ones who can't get enough of babies in flowers- we've never seen so many heart eye emoji comments as we did on this photo. We get it though, this baby girl was too sweet for words.
#2 This shot was taken for us by a friend and client during their portrait session. We swear, we hate being photographed and don't usually hijack peoples' sessions with requests for photos of us but this one was sentimental because it was taken on the very day of our one year business anniversary while we happened to be photographing on location at NSCAD, where we fell in love with photography and each other. On that note, I've just used up my cheese quota for the entire next year in one fell swoop, sorry everyone!
#1 This rooftop sesh with the boys from Sickboy Podcast was the last batch of edits we sent off in the 2016 year, so it's pretty much the perfect note to end this countdown on. After meeting these guys around town at great events and causes, it was so much fun to be able to photograph them one-on-one. We almost shared the classic human centipede reenactment the boys did just for us, but opted for this shot of them all at their handsome best instead.
And just like that, another year has flown by, and it has definitely flown. This year we're going to keep doing the work we love and doing more of it. Here's to an even beter 2017, we can't wait to share it all with you!
