As recent graduates of NSCAD university, the NSCAD fashion show holds a special place in our hearts. As an annual event, the show is truly a community driven experience. The students and professors of the fashion department drive the show every year, but behind the scenes the show involves students from other departments of NSCAD as models, photographers, videographers and more. Talented teams of make up artists and hair stylists also step forward to help elevate the show to the professional standard it has come to be known for. After years of experiencing this beautiful show as students behind the scenes, we were so excited to be spectators and photographers of this year's NSCAD fashion offering- Epoch.
Arriving early to the show gave us the opportunity to take some quick photographs of some of our favourite looks in the backstage area. Time was limited and the designers and their models were all on their own busy schedules, but we could have easily spent all night photographing the amazing range of work on display.
Although we loved all the collections we saw, we totally fell for Maggie MacCormick's extensive collection of clothing. These looks walked the fine line between NSCAD creativity and modern wearability perfectly and we loved the clean neutral scheme with occasional pops of colour.
The show was started off in fine style by Canadian fashion icon and guest speaker Jeanne Beker, who gave props to the students for all their hard and beautiful work. We're with her in admiration for the students, the work and the night as a whole.
For the most-part we decided to sit back and enjoy the show as spectators. There were a few moments through where everything lined up just right and we couldn't resist taking just a couple of pictures. These plaid pants spoke to both our east coast and kids-of-the-90s sensibilities and we appreciated the fact that we could see these pieces being worn on a day-to-day basis.
Neutrals were everywhere at Epoch and we loved it. This collection's combination of soft whites and bare feet had us craving summer... Any day now, right?
Toban Ralston's multifaceted menswear collection, BLKWRK, had us swooning. We were beyond impressed not just by the quality of the work and the execution, but also by the sheer volume. The only thing we're disappointed by is that we didn't get a chance to photograph any of these looks backstage.
Speaking of backstage, we spent the day taking candids of the getting ready process. The energy of the day is something special and seeing everything come together behind the scenes in hair, makeup, wardrobe and run-through is almost as exciting as seeing the show itself.
Honestly, spending the day at Epoch got us feeling seriously nostalgic. The show reminded of us how much we enjoyed our days at NSCAD and of what a great community we are lucky to be a part of. We can't wait to see what these students get up to next, and we're feeling a fresh burst of creative inspiration ourselves.
