When Kaylyn got in touch to book her and her fiancé Nick's engagement shoot, she let us know exactly what she was looking for. She and Nick wanted a quick and painless engagement session that was full of fun, adventure and candour, just like their relationship. The first thing on our to-do list was to figure out the perfect location. Initially, Kaylyn and Nick were thinking of a cafe or restaurant, somewhere candid and comfortable. We loved this idea, but after seeing images Kaylyn had pinned, we had to recommend a beach session. After all, who doesn't love a day at the beach?
Our soon-to-be-newlyweds fell in love with the idea of a coastal session. After a recent stint in Alberta, they are more in love with the ocean than ever and it was the perfect backdrop for their shoot. Kaylyn and Nick also told us they love to get outside and explore, so the beach worked as the everyday setting they had imagined. Luke and I will always take an excuse to get to the beach, but we couldn't help but worry a bit about the potential for weather disaster in a mid-November Nova Scotia beach shoot. As the day drew nearer we began reading more and more forecasts calling for torrential downpour on the day of Kaylyn and Nick's engagement session. The night before the skies were cloudy, but there was still no rain and when we woke up at 5am for our sunrise shoot conditions were the same. Half way to the beach, packed up in our car, cameras, blankets and towels in tow, the rain began to fall. There were sprinkles at first and then full on east coast torrential down pour.
When Kaylyn and Nick met us at Conrad's beach, the rain had slowed to a sprinkle again. Our offer to reschedule for a nicer, warmer, sunnier day was immediately rejected and we all headed out to the beach. Kaylyn described the day as "perfectly imperfect" and we couldn't agree more. And hey, the weather wasn't all bad. Kaylyn told us she would love to have a foggy beach as their engagement shoot location, which was exactly what we got. Um, can we take credit for that? Despite the rain, wet clothes, wet hair and bone-chilling cold, Kaylyn and Nick were beyond patient. Even with the crazy weather, they stayed in a great mood and were joking together the entire session. It made getting the cute and playful photos Kaylyn was after a breeze.
While we were photographing, we got to learn a bit more about Kaylyn and Nick. They met in high school and became good friends quickly. They didn't realize how much more they meant to each other until a bit later, but their years of friendship were a solid foundation for their relationship. They've been a couple for seven years, and have traveled, adventured and moved across Canada (and back) together. Their little family is completed by their golden retriever, not pictured here. Everyone thought the beach was a bit too wet and a bit too messy for any dog portraits in this engagement session. When Kaylyn and Nick tie the knot, they'll be in Vegas, which is where Nick popped the question. We're so happy we had the chance to meet Kaylyn and Nick and to sneak a piece of the east coast into their wedding celebrations. Congratulations Kaylyn and Nick!
It's always an honour for us to be invited into the lives of such wonderful people. We'll never get tired of meeting new people, learning their stories and doing our best work to take photographs they can look back on in the years to come. If you're looking for your perfect engagement session, drop us a line, we'd love to hear from you! We also include engagement photos in some of our wedding packages, and would be happy to sit down and chat and see if we'd be the right photographers for you big day.
